U.S. Seeking Extradition for Two More Sons of El Chapo

Yesterday the Justice Department announced that indictments had been unsealed in the District of Colombia for two more of El Chapo's sons, Joaquin Guzman-Lopez and Ovidio Guzman-Lopez. The Indictment is here.

The Indictment was returned and ordered sealed almost a year ago, in April, 2018. In December, 2018, it was unsealed for a few days so the Government could include it in an extradition application for them. On January 25, 2019, the Government moved to permanently unseal the Indictment. The motion was granted on Feb. 14, 2019.

The charges are for conspiring to distribute large amounts of cocaine, meth and marijuana between April, 2008 and April, 2018, knowing it would be imported into the U.S.

Two other sons of El Chapo, Ivan Guzman-Salazar and Jesus Alfredo Guzman-Salazar have been under federal Indictment in the U.S. for several years. Ivan is charged in San Diego and Alfredo in Chicago. [More...]

Alfredo is charged in the same case in Chicago as Vicente Zambada-Niebla, the Flores twins, El Chapo and El Mayo. Ivan is charged in San Diego with El Mayo and two of Mayo's sons, Ismael Zambada-Imperial, known as “Mayito Gordo” and Ismael Zambada-Sicairos, known as “Mayito Flaco.” I wrote this very detailed post about these cases in 2015.

Zambada-Imperial has been in custody in Mexico since 2014. While Mexico approved his extradition a long time ago, at least as of 2017 he hasn't arrived here. Ismael Zambada-Sicairos, like his father El Mayo, is a fugitive. A fourth son of El Mayo, Serafin Zambada-Ortiz, was arrested in 2013 in Arizona, transferred to San Diego where he was charged in his own drug case, pleaded guilty and was sentenced in March 2018 to 5 1/2 years. His time was up and he was released in September.

Homeland Security in Arizona is being credited for the indictments of Ovidio and Juan. That suggests to me the case against Ovidio and Joaquim also involves Blackberry device interceptions. Another family member purportedly under investigation is El Chapo's brother Aureliano Guzman Loera ("El Guano"). I provided detailed background here on the reported feud between El Guano and Los Chapitos (Ivan and Alfredo). Just last week an Arizona paper reported on El Guano's intercepted Blackberry communications.

Ovidio and Ivan were added to the kingpin list in 2013. Last summer, Alfredo was added to the DEA's Top Ten fugitive list. I've never heard of Joaquin Guzman Lopez before.
